I’m on a plane right now heading down to one of my favorite places in the USA – that’s South Beach, Miami. I’m going to catch up with my wife and kids who have been staying on Marco Island for the past week. I’ll meet up with them at Joe’s Stone Crab for lunch on South Beach. Then we’re off to Key West, Florida along the scenic U.S. Highway 1. While driving down, we’ll be listening to one of my favorite reggae songs, “Pick Myself Up” by Peter Tosh (of course Jimmy Buffett is also loaded on the iPod).
I was just thinking about a conversation I had the other day. It was during a coaching call with several of my coaching club members. One member was a young buck security dealer that is kicking A$$ right now, in a down market, and another member was a greybeard security dealer that is reinventing his business for growth. They both asked me this very same question: “Bob, What does it take over the long haul to be successful in business?”
Keep Picking Yourself Up To Win
I said you got to constantly keep picking yourself off the ground. If you get knocked down, the truly super-successful security entrepreneurs know that set backs are just temporary and that they have the resolve to overcome any situation.
If I get knocked down or have a set back, I always have the Peter Tosh sound track playing in my head…it’s the “Pick Myself Up” song. The verse, “I’ve Got To Pick Myself Up And Dust Myself Off And Start All Over Again.” repeats in my brain.
Sure, set backs sucks and things don’t always go according to plan, people fail me. But, you know what? It doesn’t mean I give up, hell no… I always pick myself up and dust myself off and start all over again.
I find people who can’t keep picking themselves up are destined for a life of mediocrity, and low expectations. It’s actually a learned skilled to keep getting up and moving forward.
There is one thing that I can’t be accused of and that is being lazy, stagnate, and being content with the status quo, or ever being late to lunch. I believe, today, if you’re sitting still and thinking you’ve got all the clients you can possibly handle, then you’ve got a major freakin’ bulls-eye on your back.
If you paid attention to me over the years, then you’ve seen multiple websites, hundreds of postcards, emails, video post, audio post, tele-seminars, webex webinars, different niched security marketing products, private conferences. I don’t sit still, always moving, always hustling. Some of the things I have done worked liked gang-buster and then some things went right into the toilet.
Your Length of Time In Business Doesn’t Freakin’ Matter
Why do I spend so much time changing things up? Cuz things change fast in business, and if your haven’t changed your business plan or philosophy since in 1984, then you’re in trouble, man. The greybeard security dealer, I mentioned above, is shaking things up in his security business and changing the way he does business. He’s been in the industry for over 30 years, eeking out a living, and now he’s ramping things up and starting to see the real money coming in.
How To Stay Hot… How To Reinvent Yourself
First off, you have to be honest with yourself. When was the last time you made a radical change in your business? Or your marketing? Or new technology? Or your web site?
When was the last time you truly blew your client’s mind?
Then, look at your competition to see what they are doing – and ask yourself, “how can I beat them to a bloody pulp?”
Seriously, what can you do in your business, your marketing and your positioning to really dominate your market?
Here are a few things to look at in your security business…
- Web site: If it looks like your site was built in 1992, then please, please, please for the love of Pete, step into 2011. A simple wordpress site will do just fine!
- Logo/Graphics: Spend a few bucks and get professional looking graphics. You’d be surprised how far $100 can do with a decent designer. Check out Elance.com.
- Pricing/Packing: How can you offer WAY MORE VALUE for your clients than your competitors do?
- USP: Unique Selling Proposition – In a nutshell, why should I choose to do business with your security company versus the other 15-20 local security dealers out there? What do youreally stand for? What makes your different? Can you change your current USP?
- Your Market: Can you niche your security services so that your the KING of everything to do with fire alarms systems in commercial office buildings, or HONCHO of CCTV Installations for retail stores?
- Company Name: Does your business convey what you are selling, installing or guarding? Is it memorable?
So what are going to do to kick it up a couple of notches? How do you plan on reinventing yourself?
