I can’t believe that summer is just about over! With Labor Day weekend coming up in just a few days, and on Wednesday my girls are going back to school… Boy-O-Boy how time flies!
It really hit me this summer – how fast it all goes by and how precious every single second is! My wife Natasha loaded all the girls pic’s onto her laptop in the kitchen, and then uploaded them all to one of those online photo stores where she made a bunch of albums of our past vacations and family events. She also did that thing-a-ma-jig where all the photos are displayed as a screen saver. Every few seconds a new pic pops up so I see a different photo flash across the screen of something we did together as a family or something corny that the girls did when they were little; it puts a smile on my face to see how many good times we’ve had together as a family unit.
Also, during this past weekend, I came across an old letter that my mother had sent to me when I was in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Sheppard A.F.B. in Wichita Falls, TX. Inside the letter was an article that she had clipped out of the Worcester Telegram from the “Dear Abby” column. This article made an impact on my mother, so she sent it to little old me in a white envelope with a stamp on it – this was before the internet. This poem made an impact on yours truly also. The poem is called the “The Man in the Glass”.
The Man in the Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what That man has to say.
For it isn’t your wife or family or friend
Who judgment upon you must pass;
The man whose verdict counts most in the end
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you a straight-shootin’ chum
and call you a person of place
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the face.
He’s the man to please, never mind all the rest
For he’s with you clear up to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

This poem is very enlightening. To me, it holds eight eternal truths about life. They are:
1- The only person you will have to live with for the rest of your life is YOU
2- There is no certainty that your parents, children, brothers, sisters, friends and spouse will always be there for YOU.
3- You are guaranteed that as long as you are alive, you will reap the rewards of what you have sown with your life or, suffer the consequences of neglecting yourself.
4- Your knowledge, skills, talents and abilities are what will make you happy and able to live life to the fullest.
5- There is only one person in the world that can make you rise to the occasion, only one person you can truly count on and that person is YOU.
6- If you don’t put forth the effort towards self-improvement now, and everyday, you are limiting your ability to represent yourself correctly and, therefore. the amount of success you reap during your lifetime.
7- When I say success, I mean all forms of success including spiritual, mental, physical, financial and emotional.
8- We are not measured by what we take from this life. Rather, by what we give.
If you enjoyed this piece, pass it along to someone that can use it!
