One of my fav-o-rite questions to ask when doing 1-on-1 consulting with security dealers, is to raise the question, “Who has more to gain then YOU do if YOU succeed?” This question pressures my clients to think outside themselves. Many times there might be manufacturers, individuals, or joint venture partnerships who want you to succeed because it helps them succeed.
You’d probably be surprised to learn how much those individuals or companies would go out of their way to provide you with help to become successful. For example, I was just talking with a commercial security dealer, with an IT background, and I told him that the easiest market for him to do business with is IT computer companies, and installers of structured network cabling companies because he has an affinity with this market. He can talk their talk, walk their walk and understand their needs.
A few weeks back, I had a conversation with a security installer that is very friendly with one of the largest pest control companies in his area. I suggested that they do co-op marketing together and split the cost of a mailing to residential homeowners in their county.
I just did a large trade show last Thursday where one of my manufacturers picked up the cost of the booth, another manufacturer picked up the cost of the raffle gift and another manufacturer picked up the cost of the after-hours party at the hotel! Heck, why should I pay!
If you don’t ask, you don’t get in life!
