10 Security Business Owner Commandments

I have had this list of 10 Security Business Owner Commandments thumb-tacked to my office wall since October 27, 1996, that’s right over 12 years ago. For some reason I can’t recall where I was when I jotted down these 10 commandants but I do remember I had one goal in mind: getting to the “Top of the Mountain.” If I was writing this piece today I would title it “How to Become a World Famous Security Guru”, but that topic is for another column. Since committing these words to paper I have followed them to the tee. So here it goes guys & gals:

1-     Show up.

2-     Show up on time.

3-     Show up ready to perform.

4-     Study and learn something new about your field everyday.

5-     Study and work to become an expert, a specialist.

6-     Invest time everyday in self-improvement.

7-     Manage and Invest time wisely.

8-     Look, talk, and act like a success in your field.

9-     Be a marketer first and foremost. Be a marketer of what you do, more than a doer of what you do.

10-  Know that by doing these things you are an Expert and likewise more Knowledgeable than most.
Become the leading authority in your field!

As I reflect on my notes from 12 years ago (jeeze my daughter is only 7!) they helped formulate my attitude and outlook in my business and my life. These commandments are essential to starting off on the right trail. The difference today and 12 years ago is that through my journey to the top I’ve picked up numerous cutting-edge climbing techniques and learned how to implement the latest climbing gadgets to ascend from peak to peak a heck of a lot quicker. A huge reason for my success is the fact that I’m not stuck on using out-dated climbing gear and techniques.

One thing I want you to know is that most of your competition will not explore or seek to learn any of the required training to make it to the “Top of the Mountain.” For the most part people are lazy & cheap in there acquisition of new knowledge & marketing ideas and of course no one wants to work any harder then they have to. If you follow these 10 commandants for climbing to the “Top of the Mountain,” what you will notice is that it’s always harder climbing at the base of the mountain since all the rookies & green horn’s will be in your way. As you start climbing higher your competition will slowly thin out. Few people are willing to put in the extra hours of blood, sweat and tears it takes to climb beyond the base camp. They certainly won’t take the time to study & learn new climbing techniques.

The big difference is when you get to the “Top.” There less people there, but there are still people! These are the successful folks (that have weathered a few stormy nights) the ones you what to hang out with and learn from. Never take advice from some green horn relaxing at the base disguising himself as a ‘climbing expert’ who has never even strapped on a climbing harness. You know who I’m talking about, those folks who have all the answers but no-real world experience.

The big difference at the “Top” is that the view is breath taking, and you can take in the full 360°. From there you can see even higher opportunity’s (peaks) in new dimensions! You’ll also probably here that “The Who” song playing over and over in the back of your subconscious mind: I can see for miles, I can see for miles, I can see for miles, and miles, and miles and miles and miles Oh Yeah!!
