Do You Know What This Symbol Means?

symbol-of-oppertunity

Over the weekend I was at our town’s 200th year anniversary (West Boylston, MA). It’s just a short hop, skip and jump away from the big lights of Worcester, MA – pronounced “WOOSTA” by non-locals. My wife Natasha, our two little girls Bridget, Kiera and myself spent the better part the weekend down at the fair.  It was a grand old time with plenty of arts & crafts, storytelling, animal shows, musicians, food and a beautiful parade that the girls loved. To top of the festivities there was a smokin’ fireworks display in the evening that left everyone feeling proud to be an American! A topic that consistently sprung up during conversations around the parade was the Government bailout of AIG…. What would Uncle Sam say to you if you made some bad (negligent) business decisions and got yourself in way over your head? I bet my business they would tell yah to go collect cans on the side of the road so that you can make next weeks payroll…. No mercy for the folks that pay their taxes on time and provide good paying jobs for their technicians and employees, nope nada… no bail out for the little guys!

I was amazed by the amount of people that I knew that have big fancy sheep skin degrees, hanging on their walls for all to admire, that were talking about the AIG fiasco.  After hearing the 15th person remark about it, I thought I was hearing one of my favorite songs by The Doors “THIS IS END”… This is the end …beautiful friend… this is the end…my only friend, the end… I’m sure these hard working people with fancy degrees were not thinking about the Chinese symbols for crisis & opportunity. The character on the left means danger, like the state of credit & financials in our economy. The character on the right means opportunity. Understand this, right now no matter what happens today, next week, or ten years from now, in a time of crisis all you have is opportunity- their is massive upside potential if you’re not sleeping at the wheel. What matters most is that you’re well advised and agile. Your security business can withstand a nuclear strike if your eggs (lead generation systems) are not all in the same basket. If one attraction system is wiped out, you will still have multiple client attraction systems to sustain a healthy cash flow and focus on shifting gears into new segments of the market. Residential to Commercial, commercial to municipalities..ect. Keep all your doors open and make it your goal to acquire new good-paying clients in various segments of the market. Once you establish these new connections you can “train” your new clients to do the “BIG 3″ Pay, Stay, and Refer. If your business plan  is merely built upon “hoping and praying” this market or this client doesn’t tank or waiting for the phone to ring…Yikes… cuz HOPE ain’t a very good business plan, when you get down to it.

During the Great Depression the money simply didn’t vanish. When the great depression hit- which, as you’ll remember , had been proceed by an exuberant season of prosperity called the roaring 20’s – all the money that “disappeared” didn’t  really disappear. It had to go somewhere, did it not? It most certainly did, aside from the cash horded by the mafias, money flowed to people who had new thoughts and new idea’s, like Chock Full ‘O Nuts founder who sold candy on the street corner, switched to coffee when a nearby drug store complained, and grew it into a major coffee brand. Good Humor was founded as an attempt to expand ice cream sales by delivering the product to neighborhoods. In the great depression, many people fell behind, but still others prospered enormously, it always works that way you know. If you have a diversified attraction system in place that can weather any economic uncertainty then just go ahead and pop The Beatles “Abbey Road” CD in your player and go right to track # 7 and crank up “Here comes the sun” because you have a very bright, warm future ahead of you for years to come….Sun, sun, sun here it comes… Now go sell something…And make ‘em say “YES” every time!

P.S. – Put the Chinese symbols of “opportunity” in a place where you can see it everyday. Start focusing on the big opportunity, instead of listening to all the doomsdayers out there like CNN, your local newspaper, the political parties, and lets not forget about  business owners who you interact with who are negative as all heck!
